Mohammad Amir breaks silence on IPL 2027 participation rumours, issues official statement

Mohammad Amir Rules Out IPL 2027 Auction Entry Despite British Citizenship

Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir has denied reports that he plans to register for the IPL 2027 mini-auction, putting an end to speculation sparked by his recent move into English domestic cricket. Amir said the claims were inaccurate, making clear that his British citizenship does not mean he intends to pursue an Indian Premier League contract.

The rumours gathered pace after reports suggested Amir could enter a player draft as a UK national in the Platinum category. His appearances as a local player in English competitions, combined with the upcoming IPL registration process, prompted questions about whether he might follow a route previously taken by former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood.

Amir Says IPL Auction Reports Are Incorrect

Amir addressed the speculation directly in a post on X. “Hi everyone, just wanted to clarify news regarding IPL is not true,” he wrote. He also told Cricbuzz that he would not be entering the auction.

His statement settles the immediate question of whether he intends to be part of the IPL 2027 player pool. The distinction matters: a player’s eligibility to register is not the same as a decision to do so, and registration itself would not guarantee a place in a team. Franchises would still need to select and bid for a player during the auction.

The IPL 2027 mini-auction is scheduled for December 16 in Goa. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has said overseas players can register through their respective cricket boards, with the registration window due to close on November 23. Because Amir is now treated as a domestic player in English competitions, some reports suggested he could potentially submit his name through the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

Why British Citizenship Prompted IPL Speculation

Amir acquired British citizenship in May 2026 through his marriage to UK citizen and lawyer Narjis Khan. The change has affected how he is classified in English cricket, where he has been able to play as a local player rather than occupy an overseas-player slot.

He joined Nottinghamshire for the latter part of the T20 Blast season and later represented Trent Rockets in The Hundred 2026. Those appearances have kept Amir in the spotlight as he continues his career in franchise and domestic T20 cricket after stepping away from international cricket.

His circumstances also brought Azhar Mahmood’s IPL career back into discussion. Mahmood, who also acquired British citizenship, played in the IPL from 2012 to 2015. He represented Kings XI Punjab—now known as Punjab Kings—and Kolkata Knight Riders. That precedent helped fuel the prediction that Amir might consider a similar opportunity, but Amir’s own clarification shows that the comparison should not be mistaken for confirmation of his plans.

British Status Does Not Automatically Open the IPL Door

Nationality and player registration rules can be complex in global franchise cricket. A change in citizenship may alter a player’s status in one competition, but it does not automatically establish eligibility or guarantee selection in another. Any IPL participation would depend on the league’s rules, the player’s registration, and the interest of its franchises.

There is also a broader historical context. Pakistani players have not featured in the IPL since the tournament’s inaugural 2008 season. That long absence has made speculation about any Pakistani-born player’s potential involvement especially notable. Even if Amir had entered the auction, however, there would have been no certainty that a team would bid for him or offer him a contract.

For now, the key point is straightforward: Amir has rejected the reports and is not planning to enter the IPL 2027 mini-auction. His British citizenship has expanded his options in English cricket, but it should not be treated as evidence that an IPL move is underway.

Amir’s Career After International Retirement

Amir retired from international cricket in 2024, ending a Pakistan career that included appearances in all three formats. He played 36 Tests, 61 One-Day Internationals and 62 T20 Internationals, taking 119 wickets in Tests, 81 in ODIs and 71 in T20Is.

His international journey included a return from retirement in 2020 before he eventually brought his Pakistan career to a close after the 2024 T20 World Cup. Since then, he has continued playing in domestic and franchise competitions, where his left-arm pace and experience remain valuable in the shorter formats.

Amir’s recent work in England reflects a wider trend in modern cricket: experienced international players increasingly build careers across leagues after retiring from national teams. Local-player status can be especially useful in competitions that limit the number of overseas selections, giving clubs greater flexibility when assembling squads.

What Happens Next?

With the IPL registration deadline approaching, attention will turn to the players who do choose to enter the auction and the teams’ recruitment priorities. Amir, however, has removed himself from that conversation for the 2027 event. Any future prediction about an IPL appearance would need to account for a change in his stated intentions, rather than relying solely on his British citizenship or English league appearances.

For supporters, the immediate outlook is clearer: Amir remains active in franchise cricket, but there is no confirmed IPL auction entry on the horizon. His next opportunities are more likely to come through competitions where he is already playing and where his status as a local cricketer can continue to shape his role.
