WPL 2027 schedule announced: RCB to face MI in opening fixture

WPL 2027 Schedule: RCB to Face Mumbai Indians in Season Opener

The Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2027 is set to run from January 14 to February 7, 2027, with defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) opening their title defence against two-time winners Mumbai Indians (MI). The high-profile clash will launch a season split between Vadodara and Mumbai, giving supporters in both cities the chance to watch the league’s five teams compete.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has scheduled 22 matches across the two venues, with 11 games in each city. Vadodara will host the opening stage, before the competition moves to Mumbai for the remainder of the league phase and the playoffs. The schedule sets up a compelling start, as RCB and MI—two of the WPL’s most successful sides—meet in the first fixture.

WPL 2027 Fixtures: Two Cities, 22 Matches

The first leg will be played in Vadodara and is scheduled to continue through January 24. All five franchises will begin their campaigns there, aiming to build momentum and secure a strong position on the points table before the tournament shifts venues.

The second phase begins in Mumbai on January 26. The Cricket Club of India’s Brabourne Stadium will host the Mumbai leg, including the knockout matches and the final. League-stage fixtures are due to conclude on February 3, after which the top four teams will move into the playoffs.

The format rewards consistency across the league schedule. The team that finishes first on the points table will qualify directly for the final, while the second- and third-placed sides will meet in the Eliminator on February 5. The winner of that contest will advance to challenge the league leader in the championship match on February 7 at Brabourne Stadium.

Playoff Format and Final Date

Under the announced structure, the fourth-placed team will not feature in the Eliminator, leaving the top three to contest the title through the final stage. The league leader’s direct passage to the final provides a meaningful advantage for teams that perform consistently throughout the season, while the Eliminator gives the second- and third-placed sides a final opportunity to stay in contention.

No dedicated standalone reserve days have been announced for the 2027 tournament. That makes weather and playing conditions important considerations, particularly during the later stages. Fans planning to attend the final or other key matches should follow official BCCI and WPL updates for any changes to match timings or arrangements.

RCB vs MI: A Blockbuster Opening Match

The tournament opener carries added significance because it brings together the defending champions and one of their closest rivals. RCB and MI have each won the WPL twice, making them joint-leading teams by title count. Their meeting will offer an early look at how both squads have prepared for the new season—and could provide a first indication of the competition’s balance.

For RCB, the opening game is an opportunity to begin the defence of their crown with a statement performance. Mumbai, meanwhile, will be eager to make an immediate impression and establish themselves as serious contenders. A season-opening result does not determine the eventual champion, but a strong start can help build confidence and create valuable momentum in a short tournament.

Supporters can expect the fixture to attract particular attention, given the teams’ history and their established fan bases. The matchup also offers a useful early prediction point for the season: if either side produces a convincing performance, it may quickly become a leading contender in discussions about the 2027 title race.

Mini-Auction Adds Depth to WPL Squads

The WPL 2027 mini-auction was held at the Grand Hyatt Kochi in Kochi, Kerala. A total of 150 players were part of the auction pool, with 25 players purchased by the five franchises and 125 remaining unsold.

Because it was a mini-auction, teams were not expected to overhaul their squads. Instead, franchises focused on targeted additions, including backup options and players who could strengthen specific areas. In a compact competition, squad depth can be crucial: injuries, changes in form and the demands of playing multiple matches in a short period can all test a team’s resources.

The auction’s limited number of purchases also means that continuity may play a major role in the season. Teams that retained a settled core will hope their existing combinations deliver, while new signings will be under pressure to adapt quickly and make an impact when opportunities arise.

Could the WPL Expand Beyond Five Teams?

The WPL has featured five franchises since its inaugural season: Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Giants and UP Warriorz. While the 2027 schedule remains based on those five teams, the league’s longer-term structure could change.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has indicated that the board is considering the possibility of expanding the competition. If planning by the BCCI and the WPL governing body progresses successfully, new franchises could potentially join in a future season. No expansion details or confirmed timeline have been announced, so the current five-team format remains in place for 2027.

Expansion would be a significant step for the tournament. More teams could create additional opportunities for players, broaden the league’s regional reach and introduce fresh rivalries. At the same time, any change would need to preserve the competition’s quality and ensure the schedule remains manageable for players and supporters.

What to Watch in the 2027 Season

The WPL’s growth since its launch has helped establish it as a major event in the women’s cricket calendar. The BCCI has described the league as having grown rapidly, with the WPL following the Indian Premier League as one of the country’s prominent franchise competitions. Its next season will again test the strength of the established teams while giving emerging players a platform to attract attention.

For fans, the key storylines are clear: RCB’s attempt to retain the title, MI’s push for another championship, the impact of the mini-auction additions and the race for a top-three playoff position. The two-venue format adds another layer, as teams will need to adjust to the change from Vadodara to Mumbai during a tightly packed campaign.

With the opening match scheduled for January 14 and the final set for February 7, WPL 2027 promises a concentrated run of high-stakes cricket. The RCB–MI opener should set the tone, but the title race is likely to depend on squad depth, consistency and how well each side handles the transition between venues. For anyone making an early season prediction, the defending champions and Mumbai Indians look certain to attract attention—but the league’s short format leaves plenty of room for surprises.
