Watch: Rashid Khan and Ryan Burl involved in lengthy and heated altercation in AFG vs ZIM 3rd T20I

Rashid Khan and Ryan Burl’s On-Field Clash Takes a Lighter Turn as Afghanistan Sweep Zimbabwe 3-0

Afghanistan completed a commanding 3-0 T20I series sweep over Zimbabwe with a seven-wicket win in the third match at Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Sunday, November 1. The chase was brief, but the contest produced a memorable flashpoint: an animated exchange between Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan and Zimbabwe batter Ryan Burl that ended with Rashid blowing his opponent a flying kiss.

Afghanistan needed just 80 runs to win and reached the target in 49 balls, finishing with seven wickets in hand. The result continued the team’s impressive run in T20 internationals: it was their 22nd victory in 24 matches and their second-biggest T20I win by balls remaining. While the scoreline reflected Afghanistan’s control, the Rashid-Burl moment quickly became a talking point among fans following the match.

Rashid Khan and Ryan Burl Clash After LBW Appeal

The tension began when Rashid appealed for leg before wicket after Burl attempted a reverse sweep. The ball struck the batter in line with the stumps, but the on-field umpire turned down the appeal. With the series being played without the Decision Review System (DRS), Afghanistan had no opportunity to challenge the call.

Rashid appeared frustrated by the decision. A few deliveries later, he and Burl exchanged words in the middle of the pitch, and the disagreement became heated enough for umpire Ahmad Shah Pakteen to intervene. The officials separated the players, but the argument continued after the over, prompting the other on-field umpire, Farooq Khan, to step in as well.

Such confrontations can flare up in the intensity of international cricket, particularly when a close decision goes against a bowling side. Without DRS, players must accept the umpire’s call in the moment, which can add to the pressure. Still, the episode did not define the match: the two sides soon returned their attention to the cricket, and Rashid’s later gesture suggested the exchange had not turned into lasting hostility.

Burl Offers Zimbabwe Resistance Before Dismissal

Burl was one of the few Zimbabwe batters to settle at the crease after the visitors lost two wickets for only eight runs. He made 30 from 29 deliveries, striking five boundaries and providing some resistance as Afghanistan’s bowlers tightened their grip. Wessly Madhevere was Zimbabwe’s next-highest scorer, with 10 runs.

Burl’s innings ended in the over following the exchange with Rashid. Afghanistan’s Abdullah Ahmadzai trapped him LBW, although television replays appeared to suggest the ball may have been sliding down the leg side. The dismissal added another layer to a passage of play already marked by the earlier appeal and verbal confrontation.

Rashid later blew Burl a flying kiss as the Zimbabwe batter sat in the dugout. The playful gesture shifted the mood from confrontation to something closer to friendly banter, and footage of the moment circulated widely on social media. For many viewers, it became the defining image of a match in which Afghanistan’s bowlers had otherwise dominated.

Afghanistan’s Bowlers Put Zimbabwe Under Early Pressure

Zimbabwe’s innings never recovered from its difficult start. The Sharjah surface offered movement with the new ball, and Afghanistan’s fast bowlers made the most of the conditions. Fazalhaq Farooqi removed Innocent Kaia in the first over, before Azmatullah Omarzai dismissed Brian Bennett in the next. At 8/2, Zimbabwe were already facing an uphill task.

Captain Sikandar Raza tried to counterattack, but his innings was cut short when he mistimed a shot against debutant Abdullah Tarakhail. The ball was caught at mid-off, giving Tarakhail his first international wicket with his second delivery. The breakthrough further strengthened Afghanistan’s position and left Zimbabwe with little room to rebuild.

Noor Ahmad Claims Maiden T20I Five-Wicket Haul

Left-arm wrist-spinner Noor Ahmad then produced the standout bowling performance of the match. He claimed a maiden five-wicket haul in T20 internationals, finishing with 5/13 from 3.3 overs. Three of those wickets came within four deliveries during the 11th over, as Zimbabwe struggled to pick his variations.

Noor returned to remove the final two batters in his next two overs, completing Zimbabwe’s collapse for 79 in 14.3 overs. It was the visitors’ second-lowest total in T20 internationals. The performance also extended Noor’s strong record against Zimbabwe: he now has nine wickets against them at an average of 5.66. His previous best figures, 4/10, also came against Zimbabwe, in Harare in 2022.

Afghanistan’s bowling effort was a collective one, with the early pace breakthroughs setting up Noor’s decisive spell. The combination of movement with the new ball and spin through the middle overs left Zimbabwe unable to build partnerships or establish a competitive total.

Afghanistan Make a Fast, Controlled Chase

Afghanistan had experienced early setbacks during the powerplay in the first two matches, so a stronger start was a clear priority in the series finale. Mohammad Akram, promoted to open in the absence of Rahmanullah Gurbaz, offered immediate intent by striking three consecutive boundaries before falling in the opening over.

Zimbabwe took two more wickets in the fifth over through Ernest Masuku, but the target was already within reach. Sediqullah Atal helped keep the chase moving with a boundary-filled innings, while Omarzai provided the finishing blow by launching Vincent Masekesa for a huge six. Afghanistan reached 80 in just 49 balls, sealing the win with seven wickets remaining.

What the Result Means for Afghanistan

The 3-0 sweep underlined Afghanistan’s depth in the shortest format. Their fast bowlers made early inroads, Noor delivered a match-winning spell, and the batters completed a low-pressure chase without allowing Zimbabwe a route back into the contest. The series also offered a reminder of how quickly a T20 match can turn: Zimbabwe’s top order was exposed early, while Afghanistan’s bowlers converted that pressure into a decisive result.

For supporters looking ahead, the match offers plenty to consider in any future prediction about Afghanistan’s T20 prospects. Their recent winning form, effective spin options and ability to defend or chase modest totals make them a dangerous side. The Rashid-Burl exchange may have supplied the viral moment, but Afghanistan’s disciplined bowling and Noor Ahmad’s maiden five-wicket haul were the real foundations of their emphatic series victory.
