Selectors made a mistake: Irfan Pathan questions Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s return

Selectors made a mistake: Irfan Pathan questions Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s return

Irfan Pathan Questions Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s T20I Return After New Zealand Series

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has questioned the timing of Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s return to the national T20I side, arguing that the selection may have cost younger fast bowlers a valuable chance to gain international experience.

Bhuvneshwar was recalled after an absence of around four years and featured in four matches during India’s recently completed T20I series against New Zealand. He finished with one wicket and conceded 180 runs. While those figures drew attention, Pathan stressed that his criticism was not simply a reaction to the bowler’s results. Instead, he challenged the selectors’ broader planning and asked what the team hoped to achieve by bringing back a senior player at this point in the T20I cycle.

India’s Series Finish Raises Questions About Selection Plans

India began the five-match contest strongly, winning the first three games and taking an unassailable lead. New Zealand responded by claiming the final two matches, leaving India to finish the series with a 3-2 result rather than a clean sweep.

The late defeats added scrutiny to the team’s choices, including the decision to give Bhuvneshwar another opportunity. Pathan acknowledged that the experienced seamer remains a skilled bowler, but said the selection needed to fit into a clear preparation plan. Without that context, he suggested, the recall was difficult to justify.

Pathan made his comments in a video shared on his YouTube channel. He said the selectors had made a mistake by choosing Bhuvneshwar for this particular series, noting that the T20 World Cup was not immediately approaching. If the intention had been to assess him for the 2027 ODI World Cup, Pathan said, the decision might have been easier to understand because that tournament is part of India’s longer-term planning in the 50-over format.

Experience Matters, but So Does the Selection Window

Bhuvneshwar’s return brought years of international experience and a reputation for movement with the new ball and control in key phases. Those qualities can be valuable in a young bowling attack, particularly in unfamiliar conditions. But Pathan’s central point was about timing: selectors must consider not only what a senior player can offer, but also which opportunities are available to emerging players.

International tours are limited, and conditions can make them especially useful for developing fast bowlers. New Zealand’s pitches and weather can reward disciplined seam bowling, while also testing a bowler’s ability to adjust length, pace and line. Pathan argued that the series could have served as a practical learning opportunity for younger quicks who need exposure to precisely those challenges.

Pathan Names Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav

Pathan specifically pointed to Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav as young pacers who might have benefited from a place in the squad. He suggested that Mayank could have played across the series, giving the team a sustained look at his progress at international level. Prince, meanwhile, could have been tested against New Zealand and given a chance to demonstrate what he can offer.

The value of such opportunities extends beyond the numbers on a scorecard. A young bowler can learn how to manage pressure, communicate with senior teammates, recover between matches and respond when a plan is not working. Those lessons are difficult to reproduce in domestic cricket or practice sessions alone. A series in New Zealand, Pathan argued, could have provided a demanding but useful environment for that development.

His comments also raise a wider question about India’s fast-bowling pipeline: should selectors prioritise immediate experience, or use bilateral series to build depth for future tournaments? The answer can vary from one tour to another, but Pathan’s view is that every recall should be connected to a defined role and a clear objective.

Pathan Says His Criticism Is Not About Bhuvneshwar’s Ability

Pathan was careful to separate his concerns about selection from a judgement of Bhuvneshwar’s skill. He said he was not criticising the bowler simply because he conceded runs, and noted that Bhuvneshwar had bowled well during his first two overs. A costly later over, he added, was the kind of setback that can happen to any player.

That distinction is important. Bowling figures in T20 cricket can be shaped by match-ups, field settings, pitch conditions and the timing of an over. A bowler may execute a plan effectively early in an innings and still be punished later, particularly during the powerplay when batters are looking to score quickly. Pathan’s argument, therefore, focused less on the final statistics and more on whether the selection served India’s future needs.

A Bigger Debate About India’s T20I Strategy

India’s selection choices often balance three priorities: winning the series in front of them, evaluating players for upcoming global events and building a deeper squad over time. Bringing back a proven international can support the first goal, while giving a newcomer a run of matches may better serve the third. The challenge for selectors is to make those priorities clear and ensure that players are chosen for roles the team genuinely intends to use.

Pathan’s remarks are likely to fuel discussion among supporters about how India should manage its fast-bowling resources. A strong bench is essential in a crowded international calendar, where injuries, workload management and changing conditions can quickly alter a team’s plans. Young quicks need opportunities before they are suddenly required in a major tournament, but those chances must be balanced against the need for reliable performances.

For now, the series has left selectors with several questions to consider: whether Bhuvneshwar remains part of India’s T20I plans, which emerging bowlers deserve a longer look, and how future tours can be used to build depth. Pathan’s prediction is not about one bowler’s career, but about the consequences of selection decisions. In his view, India could have made better use of the New Zealand tour by giving a young fast bowler a chance to learn on demanding pitches and grow into an international role.
