Simon Harmer says Pat Cummins ‘ate his words’ after South Africa beat Australia in 2nd Test

Simon Harmer says Pat Cummins ‘ate his words’ after South Africa beat Australia in 2nd Test

Simon Harmer Recounts Pat Cummins Exchange as South Africa Set Up Test Decider

South African spinner Simon Harmer has offered a glimpse into the verbal exchanges that added extra edge to the second Test against Australia, revealing that captain Pat Cummins questioned the hosts’ decision to keep batting after rain had cut deeply into the match. South Africa’s approach ultimately paid off: they won by an innings and 31 runs at St George’s Park in Gqeberha, levelling the three-Test series at 1-1.

The result transformed the contest after Australia had dominated the opener in Durban, winning by 214 runs. Attention now turns to the series decider at Newlands in Cape Town, where the teams are expected to meet with the title—and plenty of competitive pride—at stake.

Harmer says Cummins challenged South Africa’s batting plan

Speaking on The Grade Cricketer podcast, Harmer said Cummins was frustrated as South Africa continued to bat deep into the third day. Rain had severely disrupted the opening stages, with only 42.2 overs possible across the first two days, leaving both teams with limited time to force a result.

Harmer recalled that the exchange took place while he was batting with South African captain Temba Bavuma. According to the spinner, Cummins told Bavuma that continuing to bat was the wrong decision. Harmer, however, said the hosts were focused on building a total strong enough to put Australia under pressure despite the lost time.

“I love getting into a bit of a battle,” Harmer said, describing the moment. He added that Cummins became increasingly agitated as South Africa’s lower order kept adding runs.

The hosts’ decision proved decisive. South Africa reached 425 for nine before declaring, then dismissed Australia for just 99 in the first innings. After enforcing the follow-on, they bowled the visitors out again for 295. Harmer joked that the result meant Cummins had to “eat his words” after questioning the batting strategy.

Harmer’s playful jab adds spice before Cape Town

Harmer also described an exchange involving South African batter Matthew Breetzke, who reportedly had a few words with Cummins after coming to the crease. The spinner used the story to poke fun at the Australian captain’s widely admired image as a calm and composed leader.

Harmer joked that Australian supporters praise Cummins so enthusiastically that they might build a statue in his honour. But, he added, Cummins is not afraid to engage in a heated conversation on the field, even if he appears relaxed from the outside.

The comments were delivered with humour, but they underline how quickly the temperature rose in a Test that had seemed in danger of losing momentum to the weather. With the series tied, Harmer predicted that the Cape Town match could become an even more intense contest. His suggestion that the Test may “come to a head” reflects the growing sense that the teams have unfinished business.

Bavuma and Harmer rescue South Africa’s innings

South Africa’s victory was built on a substantial recovery with the bat. The hosts were in trouble at 110 for six before Bavuma produced a commanding 179, anchoring the innings and turning a vulnerable position into a platform for a match-winning total.

Harmer contributed an important 82, and the pair combined for a partnership of 183 from 277 deliveries. Their stand frustrated Australia’s bowlers, used valuable time after the rain delays and shifted the pressure onto the visitors. Rather than settling for a modest lead, South Africa’s lower order continued to score, giving the bowlers a total they could defend aggressively.

Marco Jansen added further momentum with a brisk 85, helping South Africa declare at 425 for nine. The innings showed the value of patience in difficult Test conditions: Bavuma provided stability, Harmer supported the recovery, and Jansen accelerated when the opportunity came.

Jansen leads the bowling attack as Australia collapse

Jansen then made a major impact with the ball, claiming five wickets as Australia were dismissed for 99 in 42.3 overs. The collapse handed South Africa control and left Cummins’ side facing the follow-on with a large deficit.

Australia showed greater resistance in their second innings. Travis Head scored a century to keep the visitors’ hopes alive, while Scott Boland displayed remarkable determination, occupying the crease for 166 deliveries in a nightwatchman’s role. Their efforts delayed the inevitable, but South Africa continued to take wickets and bowled Australia out for 295 early in the final session.

The innings-and-31-run result was a striking reversal from the first Test. South Africa had arrived in Gqeberha needing a response after their heavy defeat in Durban; they delivered one through a combination of resilient batting, disciplined bowling and a willingness to keep pressing even when the weather had reduced the available playing time.

Newlands prediction: a high-stakes series finale

The 1-1 scoreline makes the third Test a true decider, and Newlands offers a compelling setting. South Africa beat Australia by 322 runs the last time the sides met at the Cape Town venue, although the ground is also associated with the 2018 ball-tampering scandal that left a lasting mark on the rivalry.

That history adds context, but the immediate focus will be on the cricket. Australia will want to restore the control they showed in Durban, while South Africa will aim to carry the confidence of their Gqeberha win into the final match. The key questions include whether South Africa’s middle order can again withstand Australia’s attack and whether the visitors can avoid the kind of batting collapse that defined the second Test.

Harmer’s account of the exchange with Cummins has added a personal storyline to the build-up, but the series prediction will ultimately depend on performance rather than words. With the teams level, the final Test promises a tense contest in which every partnership, bowling spell and tactical decision could shape the outcome.
