Ahmed Shehzad trolls Kevin Pietersen after England’s tri-series struggles, legend fires back

Ahmed Shehzad trolls Kevin Pietersen after England’s tri-series struggles, legend fires back

Ahmed Shehzad and Kevin Pietersen Trade Jokes as England’s Tri-Series Struggles Continue

England’s difficult run in Pakistan has prompted a light-hearted exchange between former Pakistan opener Ahmed Shehzad and England white-ball mentor Kevin Pietersen. With the Three Lions losing all three of their matches in the tri-series so far, Shehzad teased Pietersen on social media about the team’s results. Pietersen responded with a joke of his own, turning England’s disappointing campaign into a brief moment of cricket banter.

The exchange followed a dramatic, low-scoring contest in which Pakistan edged England by one wicket. England had looked close to victory after reducing Pakistan to 131 for eight, but all-rounder Shadab Khan produced a remarkable innings to keep the hosts in the match and guide them to a thrilling win.

Shehzad’s Dig Draws a Playful Reply

Shehzad responded to a photo shared by Pietersen, who appeared to be enjoying time away in South Africa. The former Pakistan batter suggested that Pietersen should spend more time with England’s players while they were struggling in Pakistan.

“Spend some time with your team. They are getting hammered in Pakistan,” Shehzad wrote.

Pietersen was quick with his comeback: “I was coming till I heard you’re there! I didn’t want to deal with your drama whilst there.”

The exchange spread among cricket fans online, with many enjoying the friendly tone between the two former international players. It also offered a welcome distraction from England’s results, which have left the team facing a difficult path to the tri-series final.

Why Pietersen Is Not with England in Pakistan

Pietersen has recently taken on a specialist mentoring role with England’s men’s white-ball team. The appointment marked his return to the England setup in a formal capacity after his international career ended in 2014. In the role, he works alongside head coach Brendon McCullum and supports the team’s batters and wider white-ball plans.

However, Pietersen’s mentoring duties do not include the October ODI tri-series in Pakistan, which explains why he has not been travelling with the squad during the tournament. He was involved during England’s home ODI series against Sri Lanka, where several batters produced strong performances. His absence from Pakistan is therefore a matter of role and scheduling, rather than a response to England’s current results.

Mentoring appointments can vary from tour to tour, depending on the team’s schedule and the specific support required. For England, the challenge now is to turn that preparation into results in a series where every remaining match carries major significance.

Shadab Khan’s Stunning Rescue Act

England posted 241, with Ben Duckett scoring a century to anchor their innings. His contribution gave England a competitive total in a match where runs were hard to come by. Pakistan’s chase, however, quickly became a test of nerve as wickets fell and the home side slipped into serious trouble.

At 131 for eight, Pakistan appeared to be heading for defeat. Shadab Khan changed the course of the contest with a composed, determined century, scoring 113 to keep the chase alive. Rather than panic under pressure, he managed the innings carefully, took responsibility for the scoring and stayed at the crease as Pakistan moved closer to the target.

Shadab’s task became even more demanding after Pakistan reached 154 for nine. With only one wicket remaining, every delivery carried the possibility of ending the match. Haris Rauf supported him at the other end, finishing unbeaten on seven from 19 balls. His role was modest on the scorecard but crucial: he stayed in, gave Shadab a partner and helped Pakistan complete the chase by one wicket.

The result was a painful one for England. They had built a strong position and were close to closing out the game, only for Shadab’s innings to overturn the prediction of an England victory. For Pakistan, it was a memorable recovery that demonstrated how quickly a limited-overs match can change when one batter takes control.

England’s Tri-Series Qualification Prediction

England’s three defeats have left their hopes of reaching the final hanging by a thread. Their qualification scenario depends first on the result of Sri Lanka’s match against Pakistan. England need Sri Lanka to lose that fixture; a Sri Lankan victory would end England’s campaign in the tri-series.

If Pakistan beat Sri Lanka, England would still need to defeat the Island Nation in their remaining match—and likely by a substantial margin. The final calculation would depend on the teams’ net run rates, a measure that rewards convincing wins and penalises heavy losses. That makes England’s earlier defeats especially costly: simply winning may not be enough if the margin does not improve their position sufficiently.

In practical terms, England have little room for error. They must focus on securing a win while also keeping an eye on the other result that could determine their fate. Their recent loss to Pakistan showed that they can create pressure with the ball, but it also underlined the importance of finishing matches when opponents are down to their last few wickets.

A Lighter Moment in a High-Pressure Tournament

While the online exchange between Shehzad and Pietersen was clearly playful, it arrived during a tense stretch for England. The team’s winless start has put the spotlight on its performance, while Pakistan’s last-wicket victory has given the hosts a major boost. For fans, the contrast between England’s tournament troubles and the joking social-media exchange made the moment especially entertaining.

The next fixtures will determine whether England can keep their campaign alive. Their route to the final remains narrow, and the qualification prediction will depend on both their own performance and Sri Lanka’s result against Pakistan. Until then, Shadab’s extraordinary century—and Pietersen’s quick response to Shehzad—are likely to remain among the most talked-about moments of the series.
