Shaun Tait Named Lahore Qalandars Head Coach for PSL 2027
Lahore Qalandars have appointed former Australia fast bowler Shaun Tait as head coach for the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2027, bringing a familiar face into a key leadership role as the franchise looks to return to the playoffs. Tait will replace South African coach Russell Domingo and work alongside captain Shaheen Afridi ahead of the next season.
The appointment gives Lahore a coach with experience in Pakistani cricket, international teams and T20 leagues. Tait has previously worked with Pakistan’s national side and several franchise teams, including Quetta Gladiators. He is also already part of Lahore’s coaching setup, having taken charge of the franchise for the Global Super League (GSL) 2026.
Sameen Rana Confirms Tait’s Appointment
Lahore Qalandars director Sameen Rana confirmed the decision during a podcast on Thursday, November 5. According to Rana, the franchise had agreed that Tait would lead the team during the GSL 2026, with the arrangement extending to the PSL.
“He will continue, yeah. We had an agreement with him during the GSL. We had told him to be our head coach in GSL 2026 itself,” Rana said.
The move provides continuity for Lahore rather than introducing a coach who is entirely new to the players and organization. Tait will have an opportunity to assess the squad during the GSL before turning his attention to the demands of the PSL, where teams must quickly balance tactical planning, player availability and the fast-changing conditions of T20 cricket.
What Tait Brings to Lahore Qalandars
Tait’s playing career was built around raw speed. He represented Australia in three Test matches, 35 one-day internationals and 21 T20 internationals. He was also part of Australia’s squad that won the 2007 Cricket World Cup, and became widely recognized for his ability to bowl at extreme pace.
That background could be especially valuable to a Lahore side led by Shaheen Afridi, one of Pakistan’s leading fast bowlers. Tait’s experience may help the team develop its pace attack, refine plans for different phases of an innings and prepare younger bowlers for the pressure of high-profile matches. His exact coaching approach will become clearer during the season, but his specialist knowledge of fast bowling is an obvious asset.
For Lahore, the head coach appointment is also a significant part of its PSL 2027 prediction picture. The team has the pedigree to challenge for the title, but its prospects will depend on how effectively the coaching group addresses the weaknesses that contributed to a disappointing 2026 campaign.
A Coaching Career Across International and Franchise Cricket
Tait has built a varied coaching résumé across national teams and T20 competitions. He has served as Pakistan’s fast-bowling coach on two occasions: first from February 2022 until early 2023, and again in October 2026. His latest return came ahead of Pakistan’s T20 international series against Sri Lanka, when he replaced Ashley Noffke.
He also joined Bangladesh as pace-bowling coach in May 2025. After roughly a year in the role, Tait stepped down, citing a desire to spend more time with his family and limit the demands of regular travel. Earlier, in 2021, he worked as a bowling consultant with Afghanistan and supported the team during the T20 World Cup.
At franchise level, Tait has worked with Quetta Gladiators in the PSL and held coaching roles with Karachi Kings and the Melbourne Renegades in Australia’s Big Bash League. His experience across different teams and competitions should give him a broad perspective on how to prepare for the compressed schedules and tactical challenges that define modern T20 cricket.
Lahore Qalandars’ Rise—and the Challenge Ahead
Lahore Qalandars’ recent history is a story of a dramatic turnaround. The franchise endured difficult early seasons, including finishes near the bottom of the table, before emerging as one of the PSL’s strongest sides. Under Shaheen Afridi’s captaincy, Lahore won consecutive titles in 2022 and 2023, establishing itself as a force in the competition.
The Qalandars added a third championship in 2025, defeating Quetta Gladiators by six wickets in the final. That success strengthened the team’s reputation for resilience and showed its ability to perform under pressure. However, Lahore finished fifth in 2026 and missed the playoffs, leaving the franchise with a clear target for the new campaign: regain consistency and return to the knockout stage.
Bringing in Tait may help the team reconnect with the strengths that powered its title-winning seasons, particularly its pace bowling. Yet a successful PSL campaign requires more than fast bowlers alone. Lahore will also need reliable batting partnerships, effective middle-over plans and strong performances from its overseas and domestic players.
What to Watch in PSL 2027
Tait’s appointment creates an intriguing storyline for the upcoming season. The coach will have to adapt his international and franchise experience to Lahore’s squad, work in tandem with Afridi and help the team respond to the disappointment of missing the 2026 playoffs. The GSL 2026 could offer an early indication of his methods and how quickly the players respond to his leadership.
For supporters following PSL 2027 predictions, Lahore remain a team with championship potential, but their final standing will depend on execution across the tournament. Tait’s familiarity with Pakistan cricket and his specialist fast-bowling background give the Qalandars a credible platform. Whether that translates into another title challenge will be one of the season’s central questions.
