CSK and SRH Complete Four-Player Trade Ahead of IPL 2027 Auction
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have reshaped parts of their squads ahead of the IPL 2027 auction, completing a four-player trade announced on November 5. The deal sends England all-rounder Liam Livingstone and Australian all-rounder Jack Edwards to CSK, while Indian left-arm fast bowler Khaleel Ahmed and Australian pacer Nathan Ellis move to SRH.
The exchange gives both franchises a chance to address different squad needs before the next season. CSK gain two players who can contribute in multiple roles, while SRH strengthen their fast-bowling options with a left-arm specialist and an experienced T20 death-overs bowler. The trade also draws attention to the financial terms, particularly Livingstone’s revised fee, which is substantially below the amount SRH originally paid to acquire him.
Livingstone Joins CSK at a Reduced Fee
Livingstone will represent Chennai for INR 6 crore after initially being signed by SRH for INR 13 crore. The revised price means CSK have secured the England international for less than half of his original fee, giving the five-time champions a potentially valuable addition without committing the same level of investment.
Livingstone is known for his explosive batting and ability to clear the boundary against both pace and spin. His power-hitting could offer CSK another option in the middle order, where a batter capable of changing the momentum in a few overs can be particularly useful. He also bowls both off-spin and leg-spin, providing captaincy and coaching staff with additional flexibility when match-ups or conditions call for a change of approach.
His role in Chennai’s XI will depend on the balance of the squad and the form of other overseas players. However, his combination of aggressive batting and part-time spin gives CSK several possible ways to use him. He could be deployed as a middle-order finisher, an attacking batter against spin, or a supplementary bowling option when the team needs to manage its frontline bowlers.
Jack Edwards Adds All-Round Depth
Australian seam-bowling all-rounder Jack Edwards has also moved to CSK, retaining his existing price of INR 3 crore. SRH signed Edwards before his Australia debut, but a foot injury prevented him from playing in IPL 2026. His move gives Chennai a chance to assess a young player with the potential to contribute in both departments.
Edwards offers a different profile from Livingstone. While Livingstone is primarily recognised for his power-hitting and spin, Edwards can provide seam bowling alongside batting depth. That versatility could be useful across a long tournament, particularly when injuries, workload management or changing pitch conditions require teams to adjust their combinations.
For CSK, the trade is therefore not simply about adding two overseas names. It gives the franchise more options when constructing its playing XI and balancing batting resources with bowling coverage. Edwards’ availability and adaptation to IPL conditions will be important factors in determining how quickly he can become part of the team’s plans.
Khaleel Ahmed Returns to Sunrisers Hyderabad
In the other half of the deal, left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed joins SRH at his existing fee of INR 4.8 crore. The move marks a return to a franchise he represented from 2018 to 2021, giving the bowler familiarity with the environment as he prepares for another IPL campaign.
Khaleel arrives with a strong recent record for CSK in IPL 2025, when he claimed 15 wickets in 14 matches. His left-arm angle can offer a useful contrast to right-arm fast bowlers, while his ability to attack batters with the new ball gives SRH another option during the powerplay.
His 2026 season was disrupted by injury. Khaleel played only five matches before a right quadriceps problem ruled him out for the remainder of the tournament. His fitness and recovery will therefore be a key consideration for SRH, but a fully fit Khaleel could strengthen the side’s pace attack and provide experience across different phases of an innings.
Nathan Ellis Strengthens SRH’s Death Bowling
Australian fast bowler Nathan Ellis also moves to Hyderabad, at his existing fee of INR 2 crore. Ellis has built a reputation in T20 cricket for using changes of pace, variations in length and well-disguised slower deliveries. Those skills can be especially valuable at the death, when bowlers must limit scoring against batters looking to finish strongly.
Ellis gives SRH another specialist pace option and adds depth to its bowling group. His experience in short-format cricket could help the team manage high-pressure overs, while his variations may provide a different challenge from conventional fast bowling. Alongside Khaleel, he offers SRH a pair of bowlers with distinct styles: one a left-arm quick capable of striking early, the other a pace bowler known for mixing up his deliveries.
What the Trade Could Mean for Both Teams
The four-player deal appears to reflect contrasting priorities. CSK have invested in batting power and all-round flexibility, acquiring Livingstone and Edwards. SRH, meanwhile, have directed their attention towards pace-bowling depth, bringing in Khaleel and Ellis. Whether those plans deliver will depend on player fitness, form and how effectively each franchise fits its new arrivals into the team.
For CSK, Livingstone’s reduced fee is a notable feature of the agreement. A player with his range of skills can offer significant upside if he finds consistency, while the lower price may leave the franchise with greater room to manage its wider squad. Edwards, meanwhile, will be looking to turn his potential into regular IPL contributions after missing the previous season through injury.
SRH’s return to Khaleel also gives the franchise a familiar player with a proven IPL wicket-taking record. Ellis adds a different kind of value, particularly in the closing overs. Together, they could help the team build a more varied pace attack, although Khaleel’s fitness and the bowlers’ ability to deliver consistently under pressure will shape the impact of the move.
Official IPL Confirmation
The IPL confirmed the transaction in an official media release, stating that Livingstone and Edwards would join CSK, while Khaleel and Ellis would move to SRH ahead of the TATA IPL 2027. The league also confirmed the revised and existing fees attached to each player: Livingstone at INR 6 crore, Edwards at INR 3 crore, Khaleel at INR 4.8 crore and Ellis at INR 2 crore.
As teams prepare for the IPL 2027 auction, this trade offers an early indication of how franchises are evaluating squad balance before the next season. The prediction for both sides will depend on how well the incoming players perform in their new colours, but the exchange has already given CSK more all-round options and SRH additional pace resources. Their contributions could become an important storyline once the tournament begins.
