Mohammad Kaif sends clear message on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi after 2nd T20I setback

Mohammad Kaif sends clear message on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi after 2nd T20I setback

Mohammad Kaif Backs India’s No. 3 Call for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi After New Zealand T20I

India’s decision to send Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in at No. 3 during the second T20I against New Zealand sparked debate among former players and fans. The 15-year-old left-hander managed just four runs from eight deliveries at Hagley Oval, prompting questions about whether he should have opened the innings instead.

Former India batter Mohammad Kaif has defended the team management’s approach, saying the selection was guided by the need to preserve a settled batting order. In Kaif’s view, moving Sooryavanshi up the order could have disrupted the in-form opening partnership of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson, while creating another reshuffle when Ishan Kishan became available again.

Why India Chose Sooryavanshi at No. 3

Sooryavanshi got his opportunity after Kishan was ruled out through injury. India could have used the change to promote the teenager as an opener, but instead kept Sharma and Samson together and assigned him the next position in the lineup.

Kaif acknowledged that No. 3 is not Sooryavanshi’s natural role. However, he argued that the choice made practical sense within the wider team plan. If the youngster had opened and Kishan later returned to the XI, India might have needed to move multiple batters around to restore its preferred combination.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Kaif explained that keeping the established opening pair together avoided unnecessary changes. He said the management had to consider not only Sooryavanshi’s immediate opportunity but also how the batting order would function once the squad was back at full strength.

That reasoning offers important context to the selection debate. In T20 cricket, a batting order is often built around partnerships, match-ups and a player’s expected role. A replacement’s position is not always determined solely by where that player has performed best in the past; coaches must also weigh the effect of a change on the rest of the lineup.

One Short Innings Should Not Define the Young Batter

Sooryavanshi’s brief stay at the crease was disappointing, but Kaif cautioned against drawing firm conclusions from one appearance. He pointed to the teenager’s recent record-breaking IPL 2026 campaign, in which he claimed the Orange Cap, as evidence of his ability to make a major impact when given a consistent run.

The young batter has also experienced contrasting phases in his career. After a difficult spell in England, he made a strong impression during India’s tour of Zimbabwe. Kaif suggested that the interruptions to Sooryavanshi’s playing time may have made it harder for him to find rhythm. A player accustomed to regular cricket can find a stop-start schedule challenging, particularly when an opportunity arrives in an unfamiliar role.

Batting at No. 3 also carries different demands from opening. A top-order batter may have to enter early if a wicket falls, or wait while the openers build a partnership. That uncertainty can affect preparation, especially for a young player who has not had many chances to settle into the position. Sooryavanshi’s eight-ball innings, therefore, provides only a limited measure of what he can offer in the role.

Kaif’s Message: Flexibility Is Part of T20 Cricket

Kaif also emphasised that modern T20 players need to adapt to different batting positions. Teams frequently adjust their order depending on the match situation, the bowling attack and the available personnel. The ability to move between roles can be valuable, even when a player has a preferred position.

He cited Naman Dhir as an example of a batter who can provide that kind of flexibility. For India, the challenge is to balance a young player’s development with the practical demands of building a competitive XI. Kaif’s view is that Sooryavanshi should be prepared to contribute wherever the team requires him, while the management should continue assessing his potential over a larger sample of innings.

That does not mean every batting-position decision will work immediately. A tactical choice can appear unsuccessful when a batter falls early, but the result alone does not necessarily make the strategy flawed. The more useful assessment is whether the decision fits the team’s broader structure—and whether the player receives enough opportunities to show what he can do.

What India’s Next Selection Decision Could Reveal

The next steps for India will depend on Kishan’s fitness and the team’s preferred combination. If he returns, the management may have to decide where Sooryavanshi fits and whether another player should move. If Kishan remains unavailable, the teenager could receive further chances to adjust to the No. 3 role or move into a position that better reflects his strengths.

For fans looking for a prediction about Sooryavanshi’s place in the lineup, one innings is unlikely to settle the question. His future opportunities may depend on the availability of senior players, the conditions and the balance India wants between established performers and emerging talent. Consistency will matter, but so will patience from the selectors and coaching staff.

Kaif’s defence of the call is ultimately a reminder that team selection involves more than choosing a player’s most familiar role. India opted to protect its opening partnership and avoid a larger reshuffle, even though the No. 3 assignment proved difficult on the night. Sooryavanshi’s modest score will keep the debate alive, but judging a 15-year-old’s international prospects on a single T20I would be premature.

The key question now is whether India can give the teenager a clearer run in the side. With his IPL success and previous performances in mind, further opportunities could offer a more reliable picture of his adaptability and long-term value. Until then, the second T20I should be viewed as one challenging outing—not a final verdict on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
