Mohammad Azharuddin backs Tilak Varma for Test cricket after Christchurch T20I heroics
Tilak Varma’s calm, attacking innings in India’s second T20I against New Zealand has earned praise from former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin—and renewed discussion about the young batter’s potential in Test cricket. With India facing a steep chase and a collapsing middle order, Varma produced an unbeaten half-century to guide the visitors to a four-wicket win at Hagley Oval in Christchurch.
The result gave India a 2-0 lead in the five-match T20I series, but Varma’s performance was the defining story of the contest. Azharuddin congratulated the left-hander for his composure under pressure and said he hoped Varma would eventually get the opportunity to represent India in the longest format.
Tilak Varma turns a difficult chase around
India needed 181 runs to win, but the chase was in serious danger when five wickets had fallen for just 70 runs in the 11th over. New Zealand had seized control, leaving India’s lower order with a demanding task and little room for error.
Varma responded with an unbeaten 51 from 26 deliveries, combining measured shot selection with timely aggression. Rather than allowing the mounting pressure to dictate his approach, he looked for scoring opportunities and kept India within reach of the target.
His first key partnership came with Naman Dhir, who contributed 31 from 17 balls. The pair added 42 runs for the sixth wicket, providing India with a much-needed platform and shifting momentum away from the hosts. Dhir’s brisk scoring helped ease the burden on Varma, while the left-hander continued to anchor the chase.
Varma then joined Nitish Kumar Reddy, who finished unbeaten on 26 from 13 deliveries. Their unbroken stand of 69 from only 30 balls transformed a precarious chase into a victory bid. India reached 181 in 19.5 overs, completing a thrilling four-wicket win with one ball remaining.
Azharuddin praises Varma and raises Test prospects
Speaking to ANI, Azharuddin said he was delighted by Varma’s contribution and described him as a highly talented player. The former captain also made clear that he would like to see the batter given a chance in Test cricket, a format he considers especially important.
Azharuddin’s comments reflect more than admiration for one match-winning innings. Varma’s ability to manage a difficult situation, build partnerships and accelerate at the right moment offers a useful indication of his temperament. Those qualities can matter across formats, even though success in T20 cricket alone does not guarantee a place in India’s Test side.
The former India skipper also stressed that the victory belonged to the entire team. While Varma’s innings was central to the result, the contributions from Dhir and Reddy helped create the finishing surge that carried India over the line. Azharuddin wished the squad well for the remainder of the tour.
A strong first-class record strengthens the case
Varma’s credentials in red-ball cricket provide a compelling part of the discussion around a possible Test opportunity. He has played 25 first-class matches, scoring 1,828 runs in 38 innings at an average of 57.12. His record includes eight centuries and a highest score of 121.
That level of consistency suggests he has experience building substantial innings over longer periods, rather than relying only on short bursts of scoring. First-class cricket also tests a batter’s patience, concentration and ability to adapt to changing conditions—skills that selectors typically consider when assessing candidates for Test cricket.
However, India’s competition for batting positions is intense, and selection depends on a combination of form, team balance and opportunities in the schedule. Varma’s first-class numbers and growing international experience may strengthen his case, but he will need to continue producing reliable performances across formats.
Varma’s growing impact in international cricket
Varma has already appeared for India in both one-day and T20 international cricket. His ODI record remains limited, with 68 runs from four innings in five matches, while T20 cricket has offered him a larger platform to demonstrate his range and composure.
Across 72 T20Is, he has scored close to 1,900 runs at a strike rate of nearly 148, underlining his ability to score quickly at the international level. The Christchurch innings added another valuable example of his adaptability: he was able to absorb pressure after early wickets, then increase the tempo as the target came within reach.
Varma has also developed a reputation as a dependable batter in run chases. His performances in pursuit of targets have helped build confidence in his ability to handle high-pressure situations—an important asset for a player often asked to contribute in the middle order.
What the performance means for India
For India, the win was significant not only because it extended their series lead but because it demonstrated the depth and resilience of the batting lineup. A collapse to five down for 70 could have ended the contest, yet the lower middle order responded with partnerships, clear decision-making and aggressive running between the wickets.
Varma’s innings also offers a positive prediction for his development: if he continues to pair his natural attacking instincts with the control shown in Christchurch, he could become an increasingly important option for India in pressure situations. The next challenge will be sustaining that level of performance as opponents adjust their plans and the series progresses.
Azharuddin’s endorsement has added attention to the possibility of a future Test call-up, but Varma’s immediate focus will be on maintaining his form in the ongoing T20I series. For now, his unbeaten 51 has delivered a memorable victory, strengthened India’s position against New Zealand and given supporters another reason to watch his career closely.
