Suresh Raina Seeks Coaching Role at CSK as IPL 2027 Plans Take Shape
Former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) star Suresh Raina wants to return to the franchise in a coaching or mentoring capacity, offering his experience to a new generation of players. The former India batter says he has already approached CSK about a possible role, but the decision now rests with the team’s management.
Raina’s interest arrives as the five-time IPL champions prepare for the 2027 season and consider how to strengthen their support staff and playing squad. His familiarity with CSK’s culture, combined with years of experience in high-pressure matches, could make him a valuable resource if the franchise decides to bring him back in an official capacity.
Raina leaves the decision to CSK management
Speaking on Ravichandran Ashwin’s YouTube channel, Raina said he would welcome the opportunity to work with CSK in any role. He stressed that his priority would be helping the team and its players, rather than securing a particular title or position.
“I’ve asked them, and now it’s on them to decide,” Raina said, reflecting on his long IPL career and contribution to the franchise. He added that he would be happy to work with the players and support the team’s pursuit of more trophies, describing CSK’s yellow colours as deeply meaningful to him.
The comments underline the strong connection between Raina and the franchise. Known among supporters as “Chinna Thala,” he spent 11 seasons with CSK and became one of the most dependable batters in the team’s history. Across 176 matches for the franchise, he scored 4,687 runs and played an important part in four of CSK’s IPL title-winning campaigns.
Raina played his final IPL match in October 2021 and announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in September 2022. A coaching or mentoring role would therefore mark a new chapter in his relationship with the league and the club where he enjoyed many of his greatest successes.
Why Raina believes his experience can help CSK’s players
Raina believes his background in international cricket, the IPL and World Cups has given him practical lessons he can pass on to younger players. In particular, he pointed to the mental demands of repeated finals and the challenge of maintaining performance across a long tournament.
He recalled playing numerous finals alongside former captain MS Dhoni, including four that ended in title-winning celebrations. Raina also highlighted his record as the IPL’s leading run-scorer in playoff matches, saying those experiences taught him how to manage pressure, recover from setbacks and prepare for important moments.
“I just want to give that back to the players,” he said, explaining that his potential contribution would not be limited to batting technique. He believes players also need guidance on consistency, stress management and workload—areas that can shape a team’s fortunes over a demanding season.
That kind of support could be particularly relevant in the modern IPL, where players face compressed schedules, frequent travel and intense scrutiny. A former player who has experienced the tournament’s biggest occasions may be able to offer perspective that complements the work of specialist coaches. Raina’s prediction, in effect, is that CSK can benefit from guidance focused not only on skills but also on sustaining performance from one season to the next.
CSK’s coaching changes and the question of a batting mentor
CSK are also reshaping their coaching setup ahead of IPL 2027. Former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan has been named head coach, while Mohit Sharma has joined the staff as bowling coach. Gareth Batty is also part of the coaching picture, with the franchise reportedly considering whether he could contribute as a batting mentor.
CSK have confirmed that they will not appoint a designated batting coach. That leaves room for different forms of player support, including informal mentoring from senior figures. Dhoni remains part of the playing squad and could continue to guide teammates, while Raina’s experience could provide another perspective if the franchise chooses to involve him.
However, a return is not guaranteed. Raina acknowledged that CSK must decide whether his skills and approach fit the team’s plans. The franchise will need to weigh how a potential mentor could work alongside the existing staff and what responsibilities would best serve the squad.
Three areas Raina wants CSK to target at the IPL 2027 auction
Beyond discussing a possible coaching role, Raina identified three squad needs he believes CSK should consider at the December 16, 2026, mini-auction. His recommendations focus on adding wicket-taking options and restoring the balance that has long been a feature of successful CSK teams.
1. A spinner who can strike in the powerplay
Raina wants CSK to consider a spinner capable of bowling during the powerplay and taking wickets early. Such a bowler can disrupt an opponent’s opening partnership, slow the scoring rate and give the captain more flexibility with match-ups later in the innings.
He pointed to Ashwin’s contribution to CSK’s early title-winning campaigns as an example of the value an attacking spinner can bring. A powerplay specialist would give the team another way to control the game before batters settle into their innings.
2. A wicket-taking left-arm fast bowler
Raina also called for a quality left-arm seamer, recalling the impact of former CSK pacer Doug Bollinger. Left-arm pace can create a different angle for batters to negotiate and may offer useful variation alongside right-arm fast bowlers.
For CSK, the priority would be finding a bowler who can take wickets rather than simply contain runs. That skill can prove decisive in the middle overs, when breaking a partnership may change the direction of a match.
3. A lower-order all-rounder
The third area is lower-order batting. Raina believes CSK could benefit from an all-rounder who can contribute with both bat and ball, improving the team’s depth and giving the captain more options across different conditions.
He recalled the balance provided by players such as Dwayne Bravo, Albie Morkel and Ravindra Jadeja. Those all-rounders helped CSK build line-ups that could recover from early setbacks, accelerate at the end of an innings and still field a varied bowling attack.
What Raina’s return could mean for CSK
Raina’s comments combine a personal ambition with a broader assessment of what CSK may need before IPL 2027. His proposed role remains subject to the franchise’s decision, but his message is clear: he wants to contribute to the team that shaped much of his career.
Whether as a coach, mentor or informal adviser, Raina could bring first-hand knowledge of CSK’s traditions and the pressures of competing for titles. The franchise’s final approach will depend on its coaching structure and auction strategy. For supporters, the prospect of seeing one of CSK’s most celebrated players return to the dugout is an intriguing storyline as the team’s next IPL campaign takes shape.
