Shan Masood worried about his place in Pakistan’s squad for Sri Lanka Tests

Shan Masood worried about his place in Pakistan’s squad for Sri Lanka Tests

Shan Masood’s Calf Injury Puts Pakistan Selection in Focus Ahead of Sri Lanka Tests

Pakistan batter Shan Masood is reportedly concerned that a recent calf injury could weaken his chances of selection for the upcoming two-Test series against Sri Lanka. With his recovery potentially limiting his match practice, the selectors may consider giving opportunities to younger batters, including Abdullah Fazal and teenage prospect Sameer Minhas.

According to a report by PTI, interim coach Mike Hesson is keen to bring fresh batting options into the squad. That could make Masood’s fitness a significant factor as Pakistan prepare for a home series that carries points in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025–27 cycle. An official selection decision will depend on the batter’s recovery and the team management’s assessment of its needs.

Injury interrupts Masood’s domestic campaign

Masood sustained a left calf injury while representing Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) in the President’s Trophy Grade-I tournament. He made 85 in one innings against the Oil & Gas team, but was forced to retire hurt on 22 not out in another.

The injury is not believed to be serious, but Masood is expected to miss the final round of the domestic competition while he recovers. That absence could leave him short of competitive cricket before the Sri Lanka Tests. For a batter returning to full fitness, time in the middle can be valuable—not only for rhythm and confidence, but also for demonstrating readiness to handle the physical demands of a five-day match.

At this stage, Masood’s selection prospects remain uncertain rather than settled. Pakistan’s selectors must weigh his experience and recent international contributions against his fitness, preparation time and the form of the alternatives. The situation also creates a prediction question for supporters: will the team rely on a proven Test batter, or use the series to assess emerging talent?

Fazal and Minhas emerge as potential alternatives

Sameer Minhas is among the young players reportedly being considered. The 19-year-old impressed at the 2026 Under-19 World Cup, scoring 197 runs at an average of 65.66 and a strike rate of 105.34. While youth-level success does not guarantee an immediate transition to senior Test cricket, those numbers point to a batter capable of scoring quickly and making substantial contributions.

Minhas has also begun building a record in the longer format. He has scored 405 runs in seven first-class matches at an average of 40.50. A Test call-up would represent a major step in his development, and the selectors would need to decide whether his potential is best served by an early international opportunity or further experience in domestic cricket.

Abdullah Fazal offers another option with a more established first-class record. He has accumulated 2,369 runs in 32 matches at an average of 43.07. Fazal has also appeared in two Tests against Bangladesh, where he registered a pair of half-centuries. That experience could make him a practical alternative if Pakistan want a player who has already had an introduction to the demands of international cricket.

The choices are not simply about replacing one batter with another. Pakistan must also consider the balance of the batting order, the conditions expected in Rawalpindi and Lahore, and whether the series is an opportunity to strengthen depth ahead of future WTC fixtures.

Masood’s captaincy ended, but his batting remains relevant

Masood’s current selection concerns come after a difficult period in Pakistan’s Test leadership. He was appointed captain before the 2023 tour of Australia, where Pakistan lost all three Tests. Across 16 matches as captain, the side recorded four wins and 12 defeats, giving him a 25% win rate.

His tenure included a 2–0 home series loss to Bangladesh, but it also featured a notable 2–1 home series victory over England in 2024. After Masood lost the captaincy to Babar Azam in July, he continued to contribute with the bat, scoring a century against the West Indies and 95 against England. Those performances underline why his possible omission would be a selection decision about fitness and team composition, not simply his recent run-scoring.

National selector Aaqib Javed has said that the decision to restore Babar to the captaincy was based on concerns about leadership and game management rather than Masood’s batting. Speaking on a Pakistan Cricket Board podcast, Aaqib pointed to Pakistan’s struggles to dismiss opposition lower-order players across different tours and conditions.

“Wherever we played… be it in Australia, South Africa, the West Indies or Bangladesh… we couldn’t dismiss the lower-order batters,” Aaqib said, adding that the pattern raised concerns about leadership and game management.

Pakistan vs Sri Lanka Test series 2026 schedule

Sri Lanka’s tour will begin with a three-day warm-up match in Islamabad from November 4 to 6. The fixture should give the visitors an opportunity to adjust to local conditions and allow both teams to assess their combinations before the Test series begins.

  • First Test: Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, November 9–13
  • Second Test: Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, November 17–21

Both matches form part of the ICC World Test Championship 2025–27 cycle. Sri Lanka remain mathematically in contention for the 2027 final, although reaching the top two is considered difficult. Pakistan, meanwhile, have been mathematically eliminated from the race following heavy defeats and points deductions for slow over-rates.

What Masood’s fitness could mean for Pakistan

Masood’s recovery is likely to remain a key talking point as the series approaches. If he returns to full fitness and is considered match-ready, his experience and recent Test scores could strengthen Pakistan’s batting options. If the injury keeps him out or limits his preparation, Fazal or Minhas may have an opening to make a case for inclusion.

For Pakistan, the final decision will involve balancing short-term reliability with long-term development. The Sri Lanka series offers a chance to build confidence at home, evaluate batting depth and give emerging players exposure to Test cricket. Until Masood’s recovery and the squad announcement are confirmed, any prediction about the final lineup remains provisional—but the competition for a place in the batting order is already shaping the build-up to the first Test.
