Rohit Sharma set to play in Vijay Hazare Trophy for Mumbai: Report

Rohit Sharma Set for Mumbai Return in Vijay Hazare Trophy

Former India captain Rohit Sharma is preparing to return to domestic cricket, with the experienced opener informing the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) that he is available for the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy. The move would give the India star another opportunity to represent his home state in the country’s premier domestic one-day competition.

According to a report by The Indian Express, Rohit has contacted the MCA directly about taking part in the tournament. The number of matches he can play, however, has not yet been confirmed. His availability is expected to depend on India’s international schedule and the demands of the home series against Sri Lanka.

For Mumbai supporters, Rohit’s potential return is a major talking point. His experience at the top of the order could strengthen the team’s campaign, while his presence would also bring considerable attention to the tournament. The latest prediction is that he could join the squad once his international commitments are complete, although the final match schedule for the batter remains uncertain.

Rohit Has Informed the MCA of His Availability

An MCA source told The Indian Express that Rohit had asked the association to consider him available after India’s three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka. The source added that the batter would confirm how many Vijay Hazare Trophy fixtures he could play at a later date.

That distinction matters because the domestic competition overlaps with the international calendar. India’s ODI series against Sri Lanka is scheduled to run from December 13 to 19, while the opening phase of the Vijay Hazare Trophy is set for December 14 to 29. The tournament’s knockout matches are scheduled for January 2 to 8.

With the two schedules running at the same time, Rohit is unlikely to be available for Mumbai’s entire group-stage campaign if he is selected for India. His participation may therefore be limited to matches after the national series, depending on travel, recovery requirements and team plans. The MCA has not yet announced which fixtures he is expected to feature in.

International Duties Could Shape His Domestic Schedule

India’s Sri Lanka series is particularly relevant because it includes ODIs, the format in which Rohit has built much of his reputation as an opener and captain. A demanding international programme can affect how much time senior players have for domestic cricket, even when they are keen to represent their state teams.

For Mumbai, knowing Rohit’s availability as early as possible will help the team plan its batting order and squad combinations. His presence could provide stability at the top, but the side will also need to prepare for matches he may miss. Domestic teams routinely balance star players’ commitments with opportunities for younger cricketers, and that flexibility can be crucial during a tightly packed season.

Rohit’s Previous Vijay Hazare Trophy Appearance

A return to the Vijay Hazare Trophy would not be unfamiliar territory for Rohit. He played for Mumbai in the previous season, marking his first appearance in the competition since 2018. His performances offered a reminder of the impact an experienced international batter can make in domestic cricket.

In his opening match against Sikkim, Rohit scored 155 runs from 94 deliveries. The innings combined controlled stroke play with the attacking approach that has made him one of India’s most recognisable limited-overs batters. He was dismissed for a duck in his next match against Uttarakhand, illustrating the unpredictable nature of one-day cricket even for established players.

Those contrasting outings also underline why domestic appearances can be valuable. They give senior cricketers the chance to spend time in the middle, maintain match readiness and contribute to their state sides, while offering younger players the opportunity to share a dressing room with accomplished professionals.

BCCI Emphasis on Domestic Cricket

Rohit’s involvement also fits into a broader push for India’s leading players to remain connected with domestic competitions when they are not required for international duty. The Board of Control for Cricket in India has encouraged national players to turn out for their state teams when scheduling allows.

Several prominent cricketers, including Virat Kohli, have also returned to domestic cricket in recent seasons. Such appearances can strengthen the standard and visibility of tournaments like the Vijay Hazare Trophy. They also help ensure that domestic cricket remains an important part of the pathway to national selection rather than being overshadowed by international and franchise competitions.

For Mumbai, Rohit’s availability could be especially significant in a tournament where consistent batting is often the difference between progressing from the group stage and falling short. His leadership and tactical understanding may prove useful even if he plays only a limited number of matches.

Could Rohit Sharma Return as Mumbai Indians Captain?

Alongside the domestic cricket news, speculation continues about Rohit’s future leadership role with the Mumbai Indians ahead of IPL 2027. Social media reports have suggested that the franchise could consider appointing him captain again, potentially replacing Hardik Pandya. Some rumours have also referred to discussions involving Rohit and Tilak Varma.

At this stage, these claims remain unconfirmed. Neither the franchise nor the players have made an official announcement about a change in leadership, so any prediction about the Mumbai Indians’ captaincy should be treated cautiously. IPL plans can shift as teams assess squad balance, player roles and long-term strategy, and public speculation is not the same as a confirmed decision.

Rohit has a substantial history with Mumbai Indians and has previously led the franchise through successful IPL campaigns. That record naturally fuels discussion whenever questions arise about the team’s leadership. However, the immediate focus is on his possible return to Mumbai’s state side and how many Vijay Hazare Trophy matches he can manage around India’s international schedule.

What Rohit’s Return Could Mean for Mumbai

If Rohit takes the field, Mumbai would gain a proven one-day batter with extensive experience against a wide range of bowling attacks. His presence could also draw greater attention to the tournament and provide a valuable learning opportunity for the squad’s younger members. For fans, the prospect of seeing an India star represent Mumbai in domestic cricket adds another compelling storyline to the season.

The key details are still to come: the exact matches Rohit will play, when he will join the squad and whether his availability extends into the knockout stage. Until the MCA confirms those plans, the most reliable expectation is that his participation will be shaped by India’s Sri Lanka series and his subsequent commitments.

For now, Rohit’s message to the MCA signals a clear willingness to return to domestic cricket. If his schedule allows, Mumbai could once again benefit from his experience in the Vijay Hazare Trophy—while supporters wait for official confirmation on both his tournament appearances and the separate Mumbai Indians captaincy rumours.
