Punjab Kings retained players list 2027: Predicted retentions ahead of IPL auction

Punjab Kings’ IPL 2027 Retention Prediction: Core Players Likely to Stay as Squad Review Looms

Punjab Kings are expected to keep much of their Indian core ahead of the IPL 2027 auction, with captain Shreyas Iyer, opener Prabhsimran Singh, young batter Priyansh Arya, fast bowler Arshdeep Singh, all-rounder Shashank Singh and leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal among the leading candidates for retention. The franchise may also hold on to several overseas players, while assessing whether changes to its pace-bowling group could strengthen the squad.

PBKS finished fifth in IPL 2026, missing the playoffs by a single point after their form dipped during the second half of the campaign. That near miss leaves the team with a difficult but familiar question: should it preserve a squad that showed promise, or make bigger changes to address the weaknesses that emerged late in the season? The current prediction points towards a measured approach rather than a full rebuild.

Which Players Are Likely to Be Retained by Punjab Kings?

Shreyas Iyer is expected to remain central to Punjab’s plans as captain. His leadership and experience make him an important part of the team’s structure, particularly as the franchise looks to turn a competitive league-stage campaign into a playoff finish. Retaining Iyer would also give PBKS continuity at the top of the leadership group.

Prabhsimran Singh is another strong retention candidate. He led Punjab’s run-scoring in IPL 2026, collecting 510 runs, and his performances at the top of the order helped give the side momentum. Priyansh Arya could also remain in the squad after contributing to the team’s batting options. Keeping both players would preserve a promising Indian opening combination and give the management room to build around home-grown talent.

Arshdeep Singh is likely to be a priority in the bowling department. As a leading Indian left-arm quick, he offers a valuable combination of new-ball skill and experience in high-pressure overs. Yuzvendra Chahal could also be retained to provide control and wicket-taking ability in the middle overs. Together, the pair would give PBKS established options in both the pace and spin departments.

Shashank Singh may also remain part of the plans after adding depth to the batting group. His presence gives the side another Indian option in the middle order, an area PBKS may wish to reinforce without discarding the players already familiar with its setup.

Overseas and domestic retention candidates

Among the overseas contingent, Marco Jansen, Azmatullah Omarzai, Cooper Connolly and Xavier Bartlett could be considered for retention. Their varied skill sets offer flexibility: Jansen and Omarzai can contribute with both bat and ball, while Bartlett adds another pace option. Connolly gives the squad an additional overseas batting and all-round resource. The final decision will likely depend on how PBKS balance their overseas slots against the team’s most urgent needs.

Punjab could also retain a group of domestic players who provide depth and competition across the squad. Vijaykumar Vyshak and Yash Thakur offer Indian pace-bowling options, while Harpreet Brar and Praveen Dubey add spin depth. Harnoor Singh, Suryansh Shedge, Pyla Avinash and Vishal Nishad are among the other domestic names who could remain in contention.

Based on the current prediction, the potential retention group includes Shreyas Iyer, Yuzvendra Chahal, Prabhsimran Singh, Marco Jansen, Azmatullah Omarzai, Priyansh Arya, Cooper Connolly, Shashank Singh, Harpreet Brar, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Yash Thakur, Xavier Bartlett, Harnoor Singh, Suryansh Shedge, Pyla Avinash, Vishal Nishad, Praveen Dubey and Arshdeep Singh. This is a projected list, not a confirmed announcement from the franchise.

Potential Punjab Kings Releases Before the IPL 2027 Auction

PBKS may look to free up auction funds by releasing players who do not fit their preferred balance or role allocation. Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis could be among the most significant names under review. Letting him go would give the franchise more flexibility to target specific weaknesses rather than carry several players competing for similar positions.

Fast bowlers Ben Dwarshuis and Lockie Ferguson could also be considered for release as Punjab reassesses its pace resources. The team’s late-season struggles may prompt a closer look at whether its current bowling group offers enough reliability, particularly in the final overs. Releasing one or more overseas quicks could allow PBKS to pursue a specialist death bowler at the auction.

Nehal Wadhera is another possible departure. Releasing the batter would reportedly free up ₹4.20 crore, giving the franchise a useful amount to spend on a replacement or a targeted upgrade. Vishnu Vinod and Musheer Khan are also among the Indian players whose places could be reviewed, while Mitchell Owen may be vulnerable as PBKS evaluates its overseas balance.

The seven potential releases are Marcus Stoinis, Ben Dwarshuis, Nehal Wadhera, Lockie Ferguson, Vishnu Vinod, Mitchell Owen and Musheer Khan. Together, those moves could free up ₹25.85 crore, according to the available figures. That would give Punjab meaningful room to compete for players who better address its needs, although actual purse calculations will depend on the final retention and release decisions.

Where Punjab Kings Could Strengthen Their Squad

A wholesale rebuild may not be necessary after a fifth-place finish, but PBKS will need to turn narrow losses and inconsistent results into a more dependable campaign. Bowling depth appears to be a major area for attention. Arshdeep remains a key asset, yet Punjab could benefit from another experienced Indian fast bowler who can share the workload and provide cover across different phases of an innings.

Death bowling should also feature prominently in the franchise’s auction strategy. T20 matches are often decided in the final overs, when bowlers must execute yorkers, slower balls and other variations under pressure. Adding a specialist who can perform those roles consistently could help PBKS protect totals and close out tight chases more effectively.

The middle order is another area to monitor. Punjab’s top-order contributions were significant, but a squad needs reliable options when early wickets fall or the innings requires a late acceleration. The management may therefore look for a batter who can handle pressure, adapt to different match situations and complement the players retained from the existing group.

Overseas planning will be just as important. Retaining players with distinct roles—rather than several options competing for the same position—would help PBKS use their overseas slots more efficiently. A balanced combination could include an all-rounder, a specialist batter and a bowler suited to Indian conditions, depending on the venue and the team’s final domestic lineup.

IPL 2027 Auction: Dates and What Comes Next

The reported retention deadline for IPL 2027 is November 17, with the mini-auction scheduled for December 16, 2026, in Goa. Those dates would give Punjab a short window to confirm its squad decisions, assess the available purse and identify priority targets.

For PBKS supporters, the central prediction is that the franchise will preserve its strongest Indian foundation while making selective changes to the overseas group and bowling attack. If the management can add dependable pace support and improve its options for the closing overs, Punjab may be better equipped to avoid another late-season slide and make a stronger push for the playoffs in IPL 2027.
