Abhishek Sharma breaks Rohit Sharma’s six-hitting record to go No. 1

Abhishek Sharma Surpasses Rohit Sharma’s Powerplay Sixes Record in T20Is

Abhishek Sharma made an immediate impact in India’s opening T20I against New Zealand, producing a brisk 29 from just 12 deliveries and moving past Rohit Sharma on the list of most sixes hit during the powerplay in men’s T20 internationals. His short, explosive innings helped India launch a demanding chase of 226 with the urgency required to stay in contention.

New Zealand had set the visitors a formidable target after scoring 225 for four. Chasing a total of that size in New Zealand is a substantial challenge: the conditions can offer movement for bowlers, while the required run rate leaves little room for a slow start. Abhishek and opening partner Sanju Samson responded by attacking early, giving India a powerful platform before the first wicket fell.

Abhishek Moves Ahead of Rohit in Powerplay Sixes

Abhishek’s 29-run contribution included two fours and three sixes, scored at a strike rate of 241.67. Those three maximums took his career tally in the powerplay to 99 sixes in T20Is, putting him one ahead of Rohit’s previous mark of 98.

The milestone reflects the left-hander’s defining approach at the top of the order. Rather than taking several overs to settle, Abhishek often looks to put pressure on the bowling attack from the outset. His ability to clear the boundary in the opening six overs has made him a particularly dangerous opponent when fielding restrictions are in place.

Most Powerplay Sixes in T20 Internationals

99 — Abhishek Sharma
98 — Rohit Sharma
97 — Martin Guptill
95 — Muhammad Waseem
94 — Paul Stirling
87 — Quinton de Kock

Abhishek’s climb to the top of the list places him among a group of globally recognised power hitters. Rohit, Guptill, Stirling and de Kock have all been known for their ability to exploit the powerplay, making the record a useful measure of sustained aggression rather than a single exceptional innings.

Samson and Abhishek Give India a Flying Start

The opening partnership gave India the kind of start needed to pursue New Zealand’s imposing total. Samson continued the attack after Abhishek’s dismissal and went on to register a half-century. India reached 93 before losing their first wicket on the fifth ball of the sixth over, finishing the powerplay with 94 runs on the board.

That total was among India’s strongest starts in the first six overs of a T20I. It also underlined the value of a successful opening partnership in a high-scoring chase: one batter can attack the boundary while the other maintains momentum, forcing the fielding side to adjust its plans early.

India’s highest powerplay totals in T20Is include a 100 without loss against Afghanistan in Delhi in 2026 and 95 for one against England in Mumbai in 2025. The team also made 94 for two against New Zealand in Guwahati in 2026. Its 94 for one in Christchurch added another entry to a remarkable run of high-powered starts against the Black Caps.

India’s Recent Powerplay Record Shows a Clear Trend

India’s recent performances suggest that aggressive powerplay batting has become a central part of the team’s T20 strategy. The side has repeatedly sought to maximise the fielding restrictions, using attacking openers to build a scoring rate that can ease pressure on the middle order later in the innings.

The trend was also visible in the 2026 T20 World Cup final, when India scored 92 without losing a wicket in the opening six overs against New Zealand in Ahmedabad. Such starts can transform a match, but they carry risk: attacking batters must balance boundary-hitting with the need to preserve wickets for the latter stages.

95/1 vs England, Mumbai, 2025

92/0 vs New Zealand, Ahmedabad, 2026 T20 World Cup final

What the Record Could Mean for the Series

Abhishek’s record is a notable personal achievement, but its broader significance lies in the pressure his approach can place on opposing teams. When an opener scores quickly, captains may be forced to change their bowling plans, bring fielders inside the circle or turn to spin earlier than expected. Those adjustments can create opportunities for the other batter at the crease.

New Zealand’s total of 225 for four also highlighted the scale of the task facing India. Bhuvneshwar Kumar went wicketless in the innings, and the visitors had to rely on their batting depth to keep pace with the required rate. In a chase of this size, a fast powerplay is valuable, but it does not guarantee success; partnerships and calculated hitting in the middle overs remain crucial.

With more T20Is and ODI matches still to come on the New Zealand tour, the opening contest offers an early glimpse of the series’ potential for high-scoring cricket. Fans will be watching to see whether Abhishek can reach his 100th powerplay six, how Samson builds on his half-century, and whether India’s aggressive starts can translate into victories.

Prediction: If India’s openers continue to score at this pace while preserving enough wickets for the middle and death overs, the team could remain a serious threat throughout the T20I series. New Zealand, however, have shown that they can post imposing totals, setting up a contest likely to be decided by execution under pressure as much as raw scoring power.
